The request for a line from Bungendore (on the Bombala line) to Captains Flat goes back to 1927 when the Lake George Mine was being opened up on a large scale. Construction began in February 1938 and the 21 mile long line opened on June 17, 1940. For the next 20 odd years it was a very busy mining centre, producing vast quantities of gold, silver, lead, zinc (it was the most important of all the minerals being mined), copper and iron pyrites. By 1962 this flurry of mining was over. The railway line closed in 1968 and the town again began to decrease.
