In the 1980's, the Government decided to build a railway between Maldon (near Picton, on the Southern Highlands Line) and Dombarton (near Unanderra, on the Unanderra to Moss Vale line). It would have eased congestion for the coal trains from the West that were going to Port Kembla and vice versa. The Government then decided it would be easier to stop construction work and pay out the contract. Most of the line had been excavated, a bridge partially built at Maldon and a tunnel partially built at Dombarton. Over the years there has been talk of continuing construction, but this has never eventuated.
