The Oberon line branches off from Tarana, on the Main Western line. Construction began in 1919, with the line opening in 1923. Services were 'suspended' on December 12, 1979, after the last train ran. The line is not officially closed as it needs an Act of Parliament to close a railway line.
The stations on the branch line, and distances (in miles from Sydney Terminal) are as follows: Tarana (123mi), Carlwood (129mi), Hazelgrove (135mi) and Oberon (138mi). The line was mostly used for passenger trains with some timber and agricultural (fruit/dairy) freight. The line also boasted some of the steepest grades in NSW at 1 in 19 / 1 in 25 and was served by 19 class steam engine and branch line diesels (47, 48, 49 and 830 class).
The only station currently in use is Tarana. It is serviced by the daily Sydney - Dubbo XPT. Oberon station is still intact, being used as a local museum. It did not appear to be open on the day I visited. The line and sleepers remain in most locations (in quite good condition considering the line hasn't seen a train for almost 25 years), however in some locations it has been covered over by tar or gravel road. You can follow the rail line out of Oberon using O'Connell's Rd. Hazelgrove was stumbled upon purely by chance after driving a short distance off a side road from O'Connell's Rd. I did not venture any further than Hazelgrove as it runs into private property (for an unknown distance), and I was limited for time. The last photo (taken at Hazelgrove) is looking from the fence into the private property, with the private road seen on the left hand side.
